As I theorized about thirty years ago the art system is a chain
of complementary roles, comprising artist, critic, gallerist, collector,
museum, mass media and public. This system became truly international
in the Sixties, when the exchanges between Western Europe and the United
States were intensified, allowing the circulation and recognition of
artists and group poetics. In Italy the art system, which with the exception
of contemporary art museums does not enjoy any substantial backing from
public institutions, has developed cultural activities which have produced
considerable results on an international level, confirming the primary
role of the private sector. (...)
